The Silverado’s roof is the Passat’s belt line when it’s on a tow truck.

This is also vital information. Thank you for sharing.

Is the Miata lowered at all or are they really just that small in comparison? Curse our squishy bodies for needing crash protection, the Miata is the right size.

Also: is it only because of the Ford Raptor that every bro needs their wheels to stick out past their fenders? Or is something else encouraging that trend?

I’m all for doing whatever you want with your car, but like wicked negative camber certain things are just not worth the risk.

If I were in charge, I would have NHTSA worry less about occupant safety (where there is already a strong incentive to buy a safe car), and more about the safety of people hit by the car (whether pedestrians, cyclists, or other cars). Seems like you shouldn’t be able to drive around a giant tank that makes everyone else less safe, or at least you should have to pay some tax to internalize that negative externality. But hopefully modern collision avoidence tech will make the roads safer for small cars.

From my understanding pedestrian safety is already quite important in safety considerations. I’ve always heard pedestrian safety is the reason front clip designs are almost all fugly. I somewhat agree about your first point though, but I would consider it less about consumer incentives to buy a ‘safe car’ and more so about diminishing returns.

I think the difference between a safe and unsafe car is less than ever before (please correct me if wrong). Think of the difference between a 70’s  Chevette/Pacer/Omni/Civic and a Volvo 240 or Mercedes E class, compared to the difference between a 2019 Mirage and an Impreza or E class or Volvo SUV.

The Miata is lowered significantly. It’s setup for AutoX and track work.
